Welcome to the South West Regional Planning Module

The South West Regional Planning Module is one of 6 specialist 'thematic' modules of the South West Observatory network. It is managed and maintained by the South West Regional Assembly. 
 
The aims of the module are: 
 
-To collect, analyse and present evidence to support planning policy making in the South West; 
 
-To facilitate access to information, co-ordinate and improve monitoring work, and provide a central resource for planning data; 
 
-To be part of the delivery mechanism for the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and improve the quality of decision-making in both the public and private sector. 
 
Research and intelligence in the field of planning are essential to the 'plan, monitor, manage' approach advocated by central government. The importance of monitoring is outlined in government policy and guidance (e.g. Planning Policy Statement 3).  
 
The Planning Module supports the statutory reporting requirements of Regional Planning Guidance (RPG10) and the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS), and makes planning data available to a wider audience.
